Geophysical prospecting

Geophysical prospecting
Master Sciences de la Terre et des planètes, environnementParcours Geosciences for the energy system transition

Description

The aim of this module is to introduce the basics of seismic, electrical and potential methods (gravimetry and magnetism) to enable students in Earth and Environmental Sciences, whatever their future specialisations, to understand the contribution and limitations of these classic methods.
In seismic, we introduce the geometry of acquisition and seismic processing, with the aim of developing algorithmic techniques for imaging the subsurface using seismic reflection and refraction. Use of the Snell-Descartes law in the case where velocity varies linearly with depth. Acquisition and processing of seismic reflection data. Imaging seismic data after summation in time and depth. Examples of interpretation of reflection and refraction seismic data.

In electrical imaging, we introduce the basic principles and the various devices. We discuss acquisition and inversion parameters as a function of the desired geological targets.

In gravimetry and magnetism, we briefly describe the theory of potential, explain the principles of measurement and how to implement them in the field, and finally provide the elements needed to process and interpret the data (notions of anomalies).

Practical outdoor or TD sessions will be carried out depending on availability.
