PEPR sous-sol PC7 'VERTICAL'

ITI GeoT Researchers Participate in the VERTIQUAL Social Sciences Seminar

On October 21 and 22, several researchers from ITI GeoT took part in the Social Sciences Seminar organized within the framework of the VERTIQUAL project (WP7 of the PEPR Sous-sol program). The event brought together researchers from a range of disciplines to explore the social, historical, political, and communication-related dimensions of subsurface use and governance.

On October 21, discussions were held at the Archives départementales de l’Allier in Moulins. Around ten presentations addressed the many challenges associated with subsurface resources, including their historical significance, the controversies they generate, and the ways in which dialogue can be fostered between experts, stakeholders, and citizens.

Among the contributions, two presentations by ITI GeoT researchers highlighted the connections between science, society, and public engagement:

  • Jérôme Arnaud presented “The Use of Comics in Subsurface Controversies,” exploring how graphic storytelling can help make complex debates more accessible to diverse audiences.
  • Anne Masseran and Philippe Chavot presented “From Sensors to Debate: How Seismic Data Transform the Relationship Between Citizens and Science,” examining how monitoring technologies and data production are reshaping interactions between scientific communities and the public.

The seminar continued on October 22 with a field visit to Imerys’ Beauvoir site, where a major lithium extraction project is planned. The visit provided participants with valuable insights into the industrial, environmental, and societal challenges associated with strategic mineral resources. The day concluded with a visit to the Wolframines Museum near Échassières, offering a historical perspective on the region’s mining heritage.

Through both academic discussions and field observations, the seminar provided an excellent opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange and collective reflection on the contemporary challenges surrounding subsurface resources and their place in society.
