We are delighted to announce the launch of REINFORCE (REservoir INstrumentation For Observations, Research, and Citizen Engagement), one of the projects selected under the PEPR Sous-Sol, Bien Commun 2024 Call for Projects.
Coordinated by Benoît Derode (Université de Strasbourg/CNRS) and involving a multidisciplinary consortium, REINFORCE will contribute to the development of innovative approaches for monitoring and understanding deep georesource reservoirs, a key challenge in the context of the energy and environmental transition.
The project aims to promote resilient, inclusive, and adaptive monitoring infrastructures by combining advanced multi-sensor instrumentation, real-time data acquisition, artificial intelligence, and citizen engagement. Through the integration of these complementary approaches, REINFORCE will improve our ability to observe and understand the behaviour of deep geological reservoirs affected by natural processes and industrial activities such as geothermal energy production, fluid injection, and CO₂ storage.
Building on existing observatories in the Upper Rhine Graben and the Lacq basin, REINFORCE will generate open-access, real-time data and innovative visualization tools, including 3D subsurface models and digital twins. These developments will support scientific research, risk assessment, public decision-making, and communication with local communities.
For ITI GeoT, REINFORCE represents an exciting opportunity to strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations at the interface of geosciences, data science, engineering, and societal engagement. We look forward to contributing to the scientific and technological advances that this ambitious project will foster over the coming years.
The launch of REINFORCE will also bring numerous recruitment opportunities. Several PhD positions, postdoctoral fellowships, and engineering positions are expected to open in the coming months.
